Feline distemper is an infectious disease that attacks the white blood cells in a cat. It is acquired by contact with an infected cat and can be life-threatening. Some of the major symptoms to be aware of are fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and ultimately dehydration. If you recognize any of these symptoms in your cat and they are not acting their usual selves, get them to the vet immediately. To protect the animal, kittens should begin vaccinations at approximately 6 weeks of age with repeat vaccinations at 12 weeks and 15 weeks. They do acquire some immunity from their mother, but not enough. Also, a mother could carry the disease to her kitten in vitro. After that, cats should be revaccinated yearly. Distemper is not spread to humans, but it can be spread by infected hands, clothing. Beware of patting or picking up kittens and cats that you don’t know. Also, if you bring a new cat into your home, make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date and if it is a kitten keep it away from any other animals you may have until it completes its vaccinations

Cats just like people can suffer from separation anxiety. Though it can be from mild to severe and anything in between, some possible signs to look for in your cat are as follows: following you around the house, crying out when they can hear you but not see you, urinating inappropriately, grooming excessively and over-reacting to you coming home. Ways to help your cat deal with separation anxiety are by providing things that are a distraction such as bird feeders outside a window, catnip mice to play with and gently music playing in the background. There are also prescription drugs available from your vet, but should only be used as a last resort. It’s important to recognize a cat suffering from separation anxiety so not to cause unbearable emotional distress on the cat anytime you are away.
